Heart songs and other stories

Proulx, E. Annie

Heart songs and other stories / E. Annie Proulx - New York : Scribner Paperback Fiction , c1988. - 203 p. ; 21 cm.

In these tough, unsentimental stories, set in rural New England, farmers who can no longer make a living from farming hunt and fish to survive or become guides and storekeepers to the new rural bourgeoisie. It is difficult to know if the relentless savagery of the landscape has rubbed off on Proulx's people or if only relentless, savage people can survive in her territory. In ``Bedrock'' an old farmer is terrorized by his young wife, whom he had sexually abused as a child, and her brother. In the title story, a man has left the city to take on odd jobs in the country, where his dreams end in disaster. Proulx has created an authentic world, overturning rocks to expose the slugs and beetles beneath. Her rural New England is gothic, malevolent, and unforgiving.
