The rancheros of Pisaflores : the history of a peasant bourgeoisie in twentieth-century Mexico / Frans J. Schryer - Toronto : University of Toronto Press , 1980 - 210 p. : illus. ; 24 cm
Introduction -- pt. 1. Land tenure and politics in the Sierra Alta -- The history of a ranchero economy -- Village politics and class structure : an analysis -- pt. 2. Pisaflores : a case study of agrarian politics -- Landowners as 'revolutionaries' : 1910-32 -- Agrarianism as politics : 1932-44 -- PRI patronage and factional politics : 1965-60 -- Middle peasants in the struggle for land -- A case study of co-optation : 1960-76 -- Conclusion.
This case study of the 'ranchero' region of Sierra Alta de Hidalgo offers a new perspective on the rancheros and their role in the Mexican Revolution and its aftermath. Focusing on the economic and political history of the municipio of Pisaflores over the past hundred years, the author demonstrates that the rancheros were not subsistence family farmers, as they have been described by other scholars, but commercial farmers, a local elite employing wage labourers.
