Summary: Anthropologist Demetrio Sodi Morales was as ardent student of Maya culture. He spoke the most important Maya languages and that fact, together with his knowledge of Maya literature, won him a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1969 to study Maya colonial documents preserved in the United States. He served as Secretary-General of the Inter-American Indian Institute. Aside from many articles for scientific publications he was the author of two significant books: La Poesia Maya and La Literatura de lost Mayas.
