Hales' vision is uncompromisingly humanistic and democratic, and the belief Hales communicates is belief in the reality of the lives of ordinary human beings. That sounds simple, and it is simple, but simple does not mean easy. "If you work fast and have a strong stomach," one of Hales' poems tells us, "There's a chance/To do good in the world." This is as good a description as I can imagine of the method this book employs.
