The eight stories and one short play that make up the Widows of Thornton were first collected in 1954. They revolve around several families-black and white-who lived previously in the small town of Thornton, Tennessee, but over the years have moved to various cities. Taylor describes with honesty and sympathy the disappearance of an era and a way of life.
