Native American novelist and poet Welch produced this history of the Indian wars of the northern plains as a by-product of his work scripting a television documentary on the Battle of the Little Bighorn. In addition to military history, it contains long sections describing the life of the Plains Indians, accounts of contemporary Indian radical groups, and Welch's reactions while visiting the various historic sites in the area. As military history, the book is not successful, though the telling of the story from the Indian point of view adds novelty. The descriptions of tribal life and society are the most interesting and lively passages.
