Summary: This autobiography of a boy who grew up during the Mexican Revolution (roughly from 1911 to 1920) won praise as a small literary jewel when it was first published in Mexico. The young Iduarte, son of an honest, humane magistrate and grandson and newphew of high-ranking member of the Diaz government, is troubled by the Revolution. At first, the style of the rebel soldiers captues his imagination, but, the more he hears about the atrocities committed in the name of the Revolution, the more he wonders why people condemn the government of Porfirio Diaz and praise the revolutionary government. From that basic doubt emerges a series of youthful but probing philosophical questions about revolution in general.
