Gerald Durrell was born on January 7, 1925 in Jamshedpur, India to British parents. After moving to the United Kingdom and mainland Europe, his family eventually settled on the Greek island of Corfu where he studied zoology and kept numerous local wild animals as pets. In 1945, he became a student keeper for the Whipsnade Zoo in England. He went on wildlife expeditions to Cameroon, British Guiana, Madagascar, and many other countries.
