Gladstein and Chacón (both U. of Texas, El Paso) present a collection of works by Chicano artist Burciaga (1939-1996). Burciaga worked in a variety of genres--as a poet, journalist, essayist, short story writer, a humorist, and creator of cartoons, murals, and drawings--and was recognized as a pioneer in exposing inequities and cultural difficulties through humor, art, and deceptively simple prose. This first and only collection of Burciaga's work contains 38 illustrations and 48 poems, essays, and short fiction pieces. It contains previously unpublished essays and drawings, including selections from a memoir he was writing at the time of his death. No subject index.
