San Miguel de Allende is named for Ignacio Allende, whose big house stands proudly at the corner of the most important plaza in the town. It was Allende and his buddies who, in 1810, began the war that ended in independence from Spain. Why did the war start in San Miguel? To answer this question, the book looks carefully at the society of San Miguel el Grande, as the town was called in the colonial period.
