<br/><br/> Although European influence is strong, the Zincanatan, a small Mayan community in the Mexican highlands, continues to celebrate the old gods, especially the bat god from which they take their name, and to affirm the truth of myth and dreams. Dream interpretation is dependent upon cultural values and the dreamer's circumstances and state of mind. Dreams portend the future, serve to communicate between mortals and the divine, and offer tests of endurance. Laughlin discusses the role of dreams and folk literature in the daily lives of Middle American Indians and, in his ethnographic notes, shows the continuity of folk motifs across space and time.
