He trained as a painter with Max Kraus at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, and studied design and painting at Stuttgart’s Werkschule Merz, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, where his professors include Wilhelm Schnarrenberger and Otto Leible.
