Anthony Caro had long nurtured an ambition to exhibit his works in an archaeological setting in Rome. The Trajan Markets ? the daily markets of ancient Rome ? with their ancient brick walls and complex curved spaces dating from the second century AD, presented a challenging urban setting against which to juxtapose the severe, abstract forms of Caro's sculpture.
