Summary: Some people, when faced with life-threatening illness, seem to enter into a sphere where the petty and extraneous fall away and what’s left is wisdom. Many of these poems are written from that state. They are teaching poems that tell us something essential about how to live. But they do it without a trace of didacticism. Even when Dasmann shows us profound truths, she does it not through grand statements, but through exact detail, specificity, humor, humility, and by exposing the raw vulnerability that is always with us, just below the surface. Dasmann reminds us of what is important, which, as always, comes down to love and the ordinary moments of this extraordinary shot at life.
