Twentieth-centruy German paintings, acquired in the 1960s by the late Baron von Thyseen, form the core of the modern holdings of The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. They revolve around three main groups of artists - Die Brucke, which included Kirckner, Heckel, Schmidt-Rottluff and Pechstein, Der Blaue Reiter, led by Kandinsky and Franz Marc, and the Neue Sachlichkeit movement of Grosz and Dix. Beckmann, Feininger, Kokoschka, Nolde and Schiele are also significantly represented.
