520 _aAn extraordinary display of high scholarship. We commend S&S for publishing a book which would seem more acceptable to a university press than to a trade house. No competent adult library can do without Rhodes' splendid study (and need not at such a modest price). He devotes a large fraction of the book to the personalities and ideas that have created modern physics, then gets to the research and development of the actual devices. While The New World focused on the technical-political aspects of the project, this is technical- personal.
