520 _aBreyten Breytenbach is one of South Africa's outstanding poets. As an Afrikaaner, writing in Afrikaans, his commitment to his country brought him into acute conflict with the government. After 14 years of self-imposed exile in France, he entered South Africa in 1975. Arrested three months later, he was charged under the Terrorism Act. He was alleged to have worked for revolutionary change in South Africa and sentenced to 9 years in prison.
